Intro To Light

Strobe lights are only used up to 250 seconds per second in the shutter speed. There are three kinds of light: fill light, back light, and key light. When you use a reflector outside, you are trying to capture natural light and replicate it onto the subject. Bulb is when you open the shutter until you close it, for any length of time. mostly used at night. This is especially beneficial with star trailing and light painting. When shooting portraiture, you want to make sure and shoot at good angles. Try not to shoot up from below a subject. Feathering is when you bounce the light off of something rather than having it directly on the subject.

Photography Terms

1. What do you like to photograph? Be as specific as possible. 
I love to shoot city scape's, people, and trees.
2. What is the aperture? What does it affect (hint: it affects two things: Light and ______)
Aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. It affects light and depth of field.
3. What is ISO?
Measures the sensitivity of the image sensor.
4. What is shutter speed? What does it affect?
How much light gets in the camera. Slower shutter speed=more light. Faster shutter speed=less light.
5. What is the exposure triad and how do they work together to control exposure?
Aperture, shutter speed, ISO
6. How do you control Depth of Field (DOF)?
Through the aperture. Lower aperture=high depth of field, higher aperture=low depth of field.
7. What is the difference between Shutter-Priority mode, Aperture-Priority mode, and Manual exposure mode?

Shutter priority: You set the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture

Aperture priority, you set the aperture, camera sets the shutter.

Manual: You choose ALL settings

8. What are tonal values? What are different ways to adjust them in Photoshop?

is the light or dark of a color independent of its chromaticity (hue and chroma).Three main tools as far as tonal values go: Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Curves

9. What is a histogram? (we'll be talking more about this soon)
A light meter reading that tells you the exposure.
10. What are different kinds of light to use when shooting? Describe each (diffused, direct, existing, artificial, natural, fill, key, flash).
11. What is the basic image editing process (in Photoshop)?
12. What are different ways to make a selection in Photoshop?
13. Why is it important to use adjustment layers in Photoshop?
So then the whole document wont be compressed 
14. What is an example of an ethical issue in Photography? For example, if photography is meant to be an accurate representation of reality, is it ethical to remove or edit out part of an image for a news story? Find a recent news story that shows is representative of an ethical issue in Photography. What is your opinion about it?
15. Why do you think Photography is important today? Be specific and thoughtful in your response.

Architectural Location

Where? Hawthorne District, Downtown Portland Theaters (Crystal Ballroom, Hawthorne theater) Hawthorne Bridge, Fremont Bride, Max Stations/public transportation
Why? When you think of Portland, it is known for these things. These theaters, bridges, buses, are so interesting and look like he have so many stories.
What environment is there for you to shoot? 
When? Late afternoon, evening/dusk
How will you capture it in a unique way? I will experiment with using a tri-pod and a very long shutter speed to capture movement of people, and take lots of pictures from many different angles to gather a more unique perspective.
What particular challenges do you envision? Being able to take cameras into the theaters, having enough time, and transportation.

I like how the photo was shot from down below. It shows the perspective from an onlooker. The light gives it a bit more substance and contrast against the sky fading and the building.

I love how all the lights are on and how the lights are on. It tells a story like I could almost walk straight into this picture, I could walk into a different time.

The straight lines add such a nice touch against the sky. It's very symmetrical and I love the chimney on the lefthand side.

This building looks like there are so many stories that took place in it. I am also a very big fan of the two flags and lamp posts on either side. It is also very symmetrical. It look like it is caught in the moment absolutely perfectly. My favorite part of this photo is the composition.

The royal blue against the strong angles of the building is beautiful. It looks like there was a very long shutter speed giving it silky, sharp look. However, what really makes this photo unique to me is the angles and perspective from which it was shot. It shows the strong angles and elements of the building.

It looks like this was shot in the blink of an eye from an ordinary onlooker. I don't really like the lighting because it looks very fake almost like a painting; however, I do like how it captured the buildings, streets, and people.

This is one of my favorites. Each curtain is positioned differently. It is so clean, cut, and the overall composition and layout is one of my favorites.
